Last weekend I heard Out on a Ledge by Phil Caputo on The Moth on NPR. This story stood out to me because of something very specific that Phil Caputo says:
“All of us have to share in each others’ sufferings or risk losing our humanity.”
I think that it is so easy for us to get caught up in our own worlds, turning a blind eye to the problems of the world. So often we take our abundance of love or freedoms for granted. I’m not saying that any reader in particular is going to be able to comfort all those who suffer. I doubt that anyone reading this can heal the country of Syria; know that our country’s leaders have a tall order in front of them. We can care though; we must care.
There are so many things in our world, especially in America, that desensitize us. We become wrapped up in ourselves. My blogging about it won’t fix anything but it will remind us to open us eyes and do what we can.
My wish is that you go out of your way for someone this week. Rather it be a reconnecting with family or friends, driving a little more friendlier, performing a random act of kindness, or paying more attention to the world around you – hold on to your humanity!
